The most beautiful Carnival in the world is coming! For those who want to immerse themselves in the masks and colors of the Venice Carnival, here are some curiosities.

Origins of the Venice Carnival

The tradition of the Carnival was established by the thirty-second doge of the Venetian Republic Vitale Falier. The traditional festival was born to give the population, especially the humblest classes, a period of fun and festivities.

Masks and costumes were a panacea for citizens of the Republic of Venice who could thus publicly vent their bad moods thanks to the anonymity granted by the disguises.

The Angel’s flight

Nowadays the Angel’s flight is celebrated with the “Flight of the Colombina” that officially starts the celebrations. It usually takes place at midday on the first Sunday of the festival.

The event dates back to the 16th century when a Turkish acrobat managed to get on the San Marco Tower bell by walking over a long rope tied to a boat anchored to the pier. Among the acclamations of the joyous crowd, he then reached the balcony of Palazzo Ducale, paying homage to the Doge.

Carnival desserts in Venice

The main recipes of the carnival festivities are naturally based on frying! The most popular desserts are the Venetian pancakes stuffed with cream or chocolate and the chatter also called crostoli, galani, lies.

Also worth mentioning are the castagnole which can be filled with cream or cream and the fried cream.

Dates

This year the Carnival officially begins on Saturday 16 February and ends on Tuesday 5 March 2019.
